What is a Snowbird?
There are bluebirds, blackbirds, lovebirds, and there are shorebirds…but have you heard of the ever-elusive Phoenix snowbird? A snowbird is a term used to describe people (usually retired or affluent) from the American northeast, midwest, or Canada who enjoy spending the colder times of the year in warmer climates. One of those warmer climates happens to be our own fair city, Phoenix.
Isn’t it a bit ironic that “snowbirds” flock to a city named, “Phoenix?”
The Phoenix is a mythical egyptian bird that is said to burst into flames at the end of its very long life. Then, from its ashes, the Phoenix is re-born to live again. In a similar way, when snowbirds come to the Valley, they, too, are able to live again. It’s a sort of re-birth for the snowbird, too!
Where are the popular snowbird destinations?
Here is a list of some of the active-adult communities where some of our “snowbirds” like to perch here in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area during the cold months up north:
* Arizona Traditions
* Corte Bella
* Leisure World
* Mountainbrook Village
* Sun City Anthem
* Sun City Grand
* Sun City West
* Sun Lakes
* Sunland Springs Village
* Trilogy at Power Ranch
* Verde Groves
Now, don’t get me wrong. Not all snowbirds buy in adult communities. Some enjoy living in the heart of town where the action is, suburban areas, in golf course communities, our lake communities, or in the more outlying areas of Phoenix like Gold Canyon, Carefree, Cave Creek, and Maricopa. Whatever you’re looking for in a snowbird destination, you can find it here. So come to Phoenix and be re-born!
